Continuing the legacy of its predecessors, there are various Pokémon in Pokémon Sword and Shield that are exclusive to each version of the game. These version exclusive Pokémon include Legendary Pokémon, newly introduced Galarian forms, and powerful Dragon-types. Of course, some Legendary Pokémon are available to catch across both versions of Sword and Shield, such as Eternatus, whose capture is a key point of the narrative.
Similar to previous games in the series, Pokémon Sword and Shield's version exclusive Pokémon range from common Pokémon to Legendary trios, so knowing the version exclusives may play a big part in selecting which game version to purchase. Taking Sun and Moon as an example, the Alolan regional versions of Vulpix is available only in Sun, while Moon receives the Alolan Sandshrew. These white-ish regional variants of familiar Pokémon are accompanied as version exclusives by Ultra Beasts, including Buzzwole and Kartana in Sun and Pheromosa and Celesteela only in Moon.

The Legendary Pokémon mascots for Pokémon Sun and Moon, Solgaleo and Lunala, are exclusive to each version. Similarly, the Sword and Shield Legendary Pokémon are exclusive to their titular versions. The version exclusive Pokémon in Shield range from Galarian forms to powerful Dragon-types only available through rare spawn events. While these spawn events are exclusive to Pokémon Shield, these Pokémon can be accessed in Pokémon Sword through trading or playing through Dynamax Raid Battles with players with the opposite game version.
