Alan Wake 2 received widespread critical acclaim when it was released in late November. Our own Francesco De Meo gave it a 9/10 and said:
Despite not aiming to revolutionize the survival horror genre, Alan Wake II is an amazing game that no one who enjoys a good trippy horror story should pass on. Remedy Entertainment really outdid themselves, releasing their best game to date and one of the most immersive gaming experiences of the past few years.
Remedy's latest game also earned various awards, including Wccftech's for Best Horror Game of 2023 as voted by our staff and community.
However, the commercial success of Alan Wake 2 was more nebulous. The game failed to crack sales charts, for example, and the studio did not discuss the sales for the first few months. That changed today, with the Finnish developer revealing Alan Wake 2 is now their fastest-selling game.
It's still not a massive performance. According to Remedy, it has sold 1.3 million units as of the beginning of this month after reaching the one million milestone in late December. Remedy also highlighted that Alan Wake 2 sold over 50% more copies and over 3x more digital copies in its first two months than Control did in its first four months. Granted, their latest game is digital-only, whereas Control was not.
Remedy also offered an update on Control sales, which have now surpassed four million units to date, generating €100 million in net revenue. The studio is confident Alan Wake 2 can have a similarly long tail of sales. Moreover, the developers who worked on the game have been redirected to other projects such as Condor, Control 2, and the Max Payne 1&2 remakes, speeding up their development. Remedy believes all these projects will progress to their next stage of production during the first half of 2024.
