Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers has hit the ground running on since its release on Disney+ over the weekend. With glowing reviews from fans and critics alike and talk of a sequel already brewing, it's clear that the streaming platform have a hit on their hands. These results may be somewhat unexpected when it comes to reviving an animated property from the early 90s, but the hybrid film formula really landed with audiences and the metacommentary allowed its hilarious leads to shine.
In Chip ’n Dale: Rescue Rangers, the traditionally animated Chip (John Mulaney, Spider-Man: Into the Spider-Verse) reunited with the newly-CGI Dale (Andy Samberg, Brooklyn Nine-Nine) years after the cancellation of their old hit show. Though they're reluctant to work together again, they're left with no choice when one of their fellow Rescue Rangers is kidnapped, and so they team up with the live-action detective Ellie (KiKi Layne, If Beale Street Could Talk) to save the day.

Such a fascinating film had to have an equally fascinating director, so it's no surprise that Lonely Island's Akiva Schaffer (I Think You Should Leave With Tim Robinson) stepped up to the plate. Schaffer spoke to Screen Rant about the many years that it took for Disney to finally get a Chip 'n Dale tale off the group, the crazy amount of references he included, and why the rest of the Rescue Rangers gang couldn't be more included.
