The writers of Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangerssay they have plenty of ideas for another Chip 'n Dale movie. Written by Dan Gregor (Crazy Ex-Girlfriend, How I Met Your Mother) and Doug Mand (Dolittle, How I Met Your Mother), Chip ‘n Dale: Rescue Rangers revisits two well-known Disney animated chipmunks. Chip and Dale were originally introduced in the 1947 short film titled Chip an’ Dale,and reappeared as the subjects of a show also titled Chip 'n Dale: Rescue Rangers from 1989 to 1990. The 2022 movie’s cast and crew is packed with comedians, with Lonely Island comedy trio writer Akiva Schaffer directing, as well as John Mulaney and Andy Samberg starring.
This new interpretation of a classic cartoon penned by Gregor and Mand for Disney+ blends animation with live-action elements to tell a satirical and meta story. It portrays Chip in 2D and Dale in 3D, so Rescue Rangers includes different styles of animation, often within the same shot. In the movie, the chipmunks are washed-up actors who have had a falling out after their show was cancelled. In other words, Rescue Rangers isn’t just a follow-up to the series it’s based on, but attempts a fresh interpretation of the familiar characters, following them as they navigate their friendship, their careers, and criminal investigations.
