Sega is teaming up with Insight Editions to produce an adult-aimed Sonic The Hedgehog coloring book later this year. Sonic has built a strong fanbase of players young and old over the past 30 years — and has been featured in all manner of strange merchandise like LEGO sets, comics, and even the occasional Sonic The Hedgehog-branded energy drink. Gaming-wise, Sonic has no less than two interactive adventures on the horizon for 2022: Sonic Origins, which is a retro collection of titles from the Blue Blur’s side-scrolling 90s heyday, and Sonic Frontiers, a brand-new 3D platformer that will see Sega’s favorite hypersonic hedgehog speeding through the ruins of an ancient civilization in a story penned by longtime Sonic The Hedgehog comic scribe Ian Flynn.
Meanwhile, publishing company Insight Editions is no stranger to licensed books based on popular video game properties, ranging from official art books for titles like Borderlands 3 to children’s adaptations of Mature-rated games like God Of War (2018). Recently, the publisher raised many eyebrows by partnering with 343 Industries for an official Halo cookbook, much to the dismay of players who would have rather gotten an update for Halo: Infinite. Now, Insight Editions is giving gamers something they didn't see coming but which seems to make the most sense in hindsight: a Sonic The Hedgehog coloring book for grown-ups.
