The upcoming 51st issue of IDW's Sonic the Hedgehog series could see the triumphant return of Knuckles the Echidna after a nearly two-year-long absence — that is, if the variant cover of Sonic #51 is an accurate representation of what will actually transpire within its pages.
Outside the comics, Knuckles' character has been basking in the extra exposure that's come from his debut as an ostensible villain in the budding Sonic the Hedgehog film franchise. But longtime IDW readers haven't seen the rendition of the now-famous Knuckles they're more familiar with for nearly 20 installments, ever since issue #30. That issue, which takes place at the conclusion of the Metal Virus saga, concluded with Knuckles looking to the sky and awaiting the return of Sonic.

It appears as though Knuckles' longstanding respite will finally end in Sonic the Hedgehog #51, according to the issue's second variant cover drawn by artist Eric Lide. The artwork depicts Sonic and Tails posing cheerfully with Knuckles in front of a particularly ominous looking Dr. Eggman as he peers out from the corner of his menacing eye. Interestingly, the official teaser for #51 fails to even mention Knuckles once, focusing mainly on the immediate conclusion of what will transpire in Sonic the Hedgehog's monumental 50th issue set to come out next month. Currently, Sonic, Tails and Belle are rushing towards Dr. Eggman's city after stumbling upon it almost accidentally. This city is where they will apparently attempt to escape from in #51 by writer Ian Flynn and artist Adam Bryce Thomas, set to release on July 27.
