Paramount Pictures and Sega have today announced that a third Sonic the Hedgehog film and a live-action TV series have entered production.
The TV series, which is planned for Paramount’s steaming service, Paramount+, will seemingly focus on Knuckles, as played by Idris Elba, who makes his debut in the upcoming Sonic the Hedgehog 2.
In a statement, the company said “Paramount Pictures and Sega Corporation today announced that they have commenced development on a third feature film instalment to the Sonic the Hedgehog franchise.
“Additionally, Sega and Paramount+ are developing the first-ever original live-action Sonic series, to launch in 2023. The Paramount+ series will feature the character Knuckles, voiced by Idris Elba”
Sonic the Hedgehog was a surprise success, with it becoming the top-grossing video game adaptation of all time in the US. The sequel, Sonic the Hedgehog 2, releases April 8, 2022.
The press release also reaffirms that Sonic’s next game, Sonic frontiers, is still planned for release this year. Sonic Frontiers was officially unveiled at The Game Awards in 2021.
The game will be released in holiday 2022 on Xbox Series X/S, Xbox One, PS5, PS4, Switch and PC.
