A PlayStation 5 prototype console was put up on sale in Japan via Yahoo Auctions, and its listing provides another look at the same v-shaped design seen for the console's devkit.
As reported by Wololo.net, the prototype 2 console was put on sale with a starting bidding price of JPY 800’000, around $5500. The auction ended a few days ago, but I couldn't verify if anyone actually bought the console, as Yahoo Auctions cannot be accessed from the EEA and the United Kingdom as of April 2022.
The PlayStation 5 prototype 2 console listing on Yahoo Auctions came complete with a few pictures which highlight how this particular unit is even older than the devkit that was shown online before the PS5's final design was officially revealed. For the rest, its design is not that different from that of the devkit, featuring the Status 1/Status 2, On/Standby, Reset, Eject, System Init, Network Init indicators, six USB ports, and a LED display. On the back, the prototype console has a single HDMI port, two ethernet ports, and an additional USB port.
While this PlayStation 5 console is most likely unusable due to how licensing is handheld, it would still make for a great collector's item, so it's not surprising to see similar units going up for sale. Very few are able to afford these rare consoles, but at least their public listings give us the chance to see how different prototype designs are, compared to the final ones.
