The most powerful wizard and world-renowned scholar of the arcane in also happens to be little more than a puddle, but most players are none the wiser. This is just another one of those quintessential hidden features most will never even discover. It's programmed only to be revealed in very specific, fringe cases, in which players take an incredibly decisive action with no good reason to do so. And even then, the way it's portrayed is so subtle that some players might not even notice it.
There are many reasons for secrets like this to exist in. Some give the game replay value, keeping things interesting for those who might experiment with different decisions. Others may compensate for the wide variety of player choices that exist in the game, preventing softlocks and allowing for any and all possibilities. And of course, some secrets are just there for a little bit of fun, designed to elicit laughs or gasps of surprise. This one's a little bit different, though; the world's most powerful wizard is actually a puddle in order to protect his expansive role in and lore.
The Elminster that the party meets in is only a simulacrum, not the real-deal wizard he claims to be. In order to reveal this, Elminster must be killed, at which point he collapses into a puddle. However, he doesn't give the party much reason to do that. He may be a little suspicious at first, asking uncomfortable questions about whether the party knows a man named Gale, and seeming to know an inordinate amount about his unusual medical condition. But he doesn't give the party any reason to attack him, so most players will never see this subtle detail, and even fewer will know what it means.
