Even though Ben wasn’t introduced until later in the season, his story has certainly made a big impact. It appears to be a straightforward catfish scam that is obvious to everyone but Ben. All of Ben’s friends and relatives were skeptical of his online love Mahogany, and it took his daughter all of two seconds to call her selfie “the fakest picture I’ve ever seen.” Alas, Ben wasn’t deterred. He went ahead with his plan to go to Peru, even though Mahogany was trying to drop hints that she doesn’t want to meet him. Viewers last saw Ben sitting at a restaurant for hours, ordering nothing but water with Mahogany still being nowhere in sight.

Fans don’t mind making jokes at Ben’s expense because they’re convinced his storyline is faker than Mahogany’s selfies. Ben admitted that he’s been catfished before, so it’s wild to believe that he wouldn’t spot the signs a second time. Viewers can’t believe they’re expected to believe what TLC is selling them with “Ben’s journey” and think that all his actions seem a bit too ridiculous to actually be true. They think Ben is completely out of touch with reality. Instead, he is coming across as selfish and more interested in his 24-year-old girlfriend than being a good dad.
