Castlevania's Adi Shankar discusses his idea for a G.I. Joe and Transformers crossover film. After achieving success as a producer with the 2011 feature, The Grey, a project that would earn the number one spot at the North American box office, and having founded the media company, «Bootleg Universe,» in 2012, Shankar has established himself as a rising influence in the entertainment industry. One of his most well-known endeavors is the Netflix animated fantasy series, Castlevania, which premiered in 2017 to critical acclaim and strong audience viewership. The show concluded last year after four seasons, but Shankar remains busy, serving as executive producer and/or showrunner on a number of upcoming television projects, including the Netflix superhero series The Guardians of Justice.
The G.I. Joe movies have been trying to successfully launch a franchise for some time now, dating back to 2009 with the release of their first entry, The Rise of Cobra, starring Channing Tatum, followed by 2013's Retaliation. Both films were received negatively by critics, though relative commercial success warranted the development of additional installments. The 2021 series reboot, Snake Eyes: G.I. Joe Origins failed to perform at the box office, but given the effects of the COVID-19 pandemic, its future is still in consideration. Many have criticized the films for years, calling them disappointing and uneven attempts at building something much larger. G.I. Joe entries are often criticized for just introductions and have never expanded their stories in the sequels, and with a fourth film in development, now might be the time to start revitalizing their efforts.
