Cobra Kai's season 4 ending saw Miguel heading to Mexico in the search for his father, and that might set up a better story for season 5 than what Daniel and Mr. Miyagi had in Karate Kid 2. After giving up fighting in the tournament and leaving without telling anyone, Miguel is now on his way to Mexico to find out more about his father and his past. With four seasons of clues and teasing, it looks like Cobra Kai season 5 will finally dive into Miguel’s backstory.
Introduced as a very Daniel-like character who needed the help of a mentor figure to face the challenges of life, Miguel quickly evolved into one of Cobra Kai's most interesting characters and one of the show's most skilled fighters. After going back and forth in his relationship with both Sam and Johnny Lawrence, Miguel now needs to come to terms with his own history. Unsure that karate is a priority and aware that Johnny cannot fully make up for the absence of a father in his life, Miguel had to make a difficult decision at the end of Cobra Kai season 4.

Miguel's trip to Mexico could offer not only a much-needed change in pace in Cobra Kai but also a personal journey that would greatly benefit the character. In fact, Miguel's time in Mexico may resemble and even surpass the story of Daniel and Mr. Miyagi to Okinawa in Karate Kid 2. Like Daniel back then, Miguel needs time away from home to clear his head and define what he wants out of life. Similarly, Miguel also needs to face the ghosts of his past, something that was the central theme of Mr. Miyagi’s story in Karate Kid 2.
