The official trailer for the Lifetime prequel series Flowers in the Attic: The Origin shows the lead-up to the grandchildren being locked in the attic. Flowers in the Attic began as a 1979 novel by V.C. Andrews, telling the story of the Dollanganger family. When their father dies and their mother attempts to reconcile with her ailing father, who is unaware she has children, siblings Chris, Cathy, Carrie, and Cory are hidden in an attic, where they are then kept trapped by their grandmother Olivia for years. The novel achieved massive popularity off the back of its controversial subject matter (which also includes incestual overtones that would eventually inspire a Riverdalestoryline) and spawned the Dollanganger series, which now includes over 10 novels and spinoffs.
Over time, the book series expanded into an overall multimedia franchise. Originally, A Nightmare on Elm Street director Wes Craven was attached to adapt the novel into a film, though the project — which starred Louise Fletcher and Kristy Swanson — eventually went to Jeffrey Bloom in 1987. It was later re-adapted by Lifetime into a 2014 TV movie starring Heather Graham, Ellen Burstyn, and Kiernan Shipka. That film was followed by three sequels, adapting the follow-up novels Petals on the Wind, If There Be Thorns, and Seeds of Yesterday. Although Lifetime hasn't touched their Flowers in the Attic franchise since 2015, they recently announced Flowers in the Attic: The Origin, a series that will act as a prequel to the original story, loosely adapting the final novel Garden of Shadows.
