Apple announced the M1 iMac in April of 2021 with major changes in terms of design and internals. However, the company did not upgrade the machine with an M2 chip last year. We are now hearing that the company is in the works to launch the upgraded iMac with an M3 chip which will be significantly more powerful than the current model.
It will be a busy year for Apple as far as its Mac lineup is concerned. We are anticipating the new 15.4-inch MacBook Air, Mac Pro, and the 24-inch iMac to launch sometime this year. Prominent analyst Mark Gurman highlights in his latest Power On newsletter that the 24-inch iMac is in its advanced stage of development. He also stated that the upcoming 24-inch iMac will come with an M3 chip which will offer significantly better performance.
In terms of looks, you can expect the same design and form factor but new color options could potentially be part of the mix. Despite customers longing for a 27-inch variant of the machine, the M3 variant will rock the same 24-inch display. There have been no details on a bigger variant of the machine so far.
The M3 chip will pack major performance gains over the current M1 iMac. This is because the M3 chip will be fabricated on TSMC's 3nm architecture. What this means is that the chip will not only bring computational and graphical improvements but also consume less power. In contrast, the M1 and M2 chips are based on a 5nm process. Apple's latest 14-inch and 16-inch MacBook Pro models are powered by the new M2 Pro and M2 Max chips based on TSMC's 5nm process.
The M3 chip will potentially offer the same 8-core CPU as its predecessors. However, the chip will offer additional GPU cores for enhanced rendering and graphical output. The highest configuration M2
