Tony Hawk recently returned to video game fame with the Tony Hawk's Pro Skater 1 + 2 remaster in late 2020, which led to renewed interest in skating video games.
The long-running Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater series, first developed by the now-defunct Neversoft and published by Activision in 1999, has often been the skateboarding game of choice for fans of the genre. The series puts players in control of either Hawk or another professional skateboarder of players' choosing, and allows users to skate around various locales. Players must complete objectives to unlock new stages and progress, and may also try to obtain the best possible score in the process by performing various tricks. After Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 5 released in 2015 to scathing critical reviews, the series made a triumphant return in late 2020 with Tony Hawk’s Pro Skater 1 + 2, which later saw current-gen upgrades and even a portable version of Tony Hawk's Pro Skater thanks to Nintendo Switch.
