The fate of the Master Sword in appears to have already been made clear. The sight of Link's iconic weapon all but completely destroyed has naturally been the focus of much speculation since it first appeared in promotional material. However, the circumstances surrounding the sword’s breaking now seem clearer than ever.
The Sword of Evil’s Bane is undoubtedly one of the most recognizable weapons in video game history, having been used time and time again to destroy the evil forces threatening Hyrule. Regularly appearing in games ever since it was first introduced in, ’s Master Sword is, as its name suggests, the ultimate defense against evil. However, alongside the announcement of a delay in ’s release in 2021, new footage revealed that the Master Sword would soon become incredibly damaged; a shot of Link drawing the once-brilliant blade showed it to be dulled, mottled, and shattered.

The end of the latest trailer for appears to have revealed exactly how the Master Sword will come to be in this state. During what is presumably the opening sequence of the game, Link is assaulted by a wave of Malice. This Malice can also be seen coating the Master Sword, and it seems clear that the assault of this potent dark magic is what damages the blade, corroding it until little remains. At the same time, with Link apparently using a prosthetic arm in , it is also likely that this same attack will be what so badly injures Link’s arm.
