Warning! Spoilers ahead for Young Sheldon season 5.
Paige's dark arc in Young Sheldon's 100th episode will affect Sheldon's (Iain Armitage) story moving forward. Following a two-week hiatus, the CBS sitcom celebrated its latest major milestone and, instead of a cameo from any of The Big Bang Theory characters, Young Sheldon brought back McKenna Grace's Paige instead.
Introduced in Young Sheldon season 2, Paige has appeared on the show several times over the years. As Sheldon's fellow child prodigy, the pair's relationship has been complicated thus far, primarily because he has been insecure that she seems to be better adjusted than she is. Unfortunately, that all changed when Paige's parents split up. When she re-emerged in Young Sheldon's 100th episode, she was in distress, and in the end, she decided to drop out of school. Briefly, she attempted to run away but she eventually return, although that didn't resolve her personal woes.

Whether or not it will explicitly set up the character's arc in the show is uncertain, and, unfortunately, the producer didn't say. Read his full comment below:
