The title takes place in the same universe as Rocksteady Games' games, but unlike those titles, is a third-person shooter that can be played solo with AI teammates, or with up to four players in online co-op. With the game's focus on online co-op, some are likely wondering if players will be restricted to playing with those on their chosen gaming platform, or if will have crossplay functionality.
Crossplay has become a much sought-after feature for many online games in recent years, due to the large number of players across different platforms. Whereas players used to be limited to playing with those on their own chosen platform, massive titles and franchises such as and have pushed for a way to unite their player bases, regardless of whether they play on a particular console or PC. Microsoft and Nintendo were early adopters of the feature, however, Sony had been reluctant regarding the idea of allowing its players to join those on competing platforms in the past. Eventually, in June 2021, PlayStation boss Jim Ryan issued a statement saying that Sony had decided to encourage and support crossplay more, following the success of the function on other titles.
As stated on the official website's FAQ page, the game will have crossplay for its online co-op mode. This will allow players to play with others regardless of their chosen gaming platform when the title launches on PlayStation 5, Xbox Series S/X, and Steam on February 2 — or 72 hours earlier, on January 30 for those who pre-ordered the game's Deluxe Edition on these platforms — and Epic Games Store on its later
