Moritz and Toby Ascher have confirmed that they won't recast Dr. Robotnik for Sonic the Hedgehog 3 should Jim Carrey retire, and their choice is undoubtedly the right one. First appearing in 2020's Sonic the Hedgehog, Jim Carrey's Dr. Robotnik stole the show within the franchise. Carrey's performance was one of the first film's most praised elements, as he managed to perfectly blend the character's villainous nature with his own unique brand of comedy.
Reprising the role for Sonic the Hedgehog 2, Carrey's Dr. Robotnik once again proved one of the most universally enjoyed aspects of the film. However, as Jim Carrey has now announced his plan to retire from acting, the character's future in the franchise seems uncertain. Whether Carrey will fully retire or choose to reprise his role for future sequels remains to be seen, but Sonic 2's producers have said that Dr. Robotnik won't be recast if Carrey retires.

This stance is ultimately the right one to take. Replacing an actor of Jim Carrey's immense (and specific) talent is effectively impossible, particularly after Sonic the Hedgehog and Sonic the Hedgehog 2 worked hard at fleshing the character out. Carrey has made the role his own, so replacing the actor in the role would be unthinkable. Besides, Sonic 3 already has a potential Robotnik replacement that wouldn't require replacing Carrey, making Mortiz and Ascher's decision the perfect reaction to Carrey's retirement.
