Netflix announced the incredibly exciting decision to bring Hades to mobile this weekend. However, bad news shortly followed for us Android gamers when we learned that it was skipping our platform entirely.
Initially, I was pretty baffled by this decision. If you’re going to bring one of the greatest games of all time to mobile, why would you skip the biggest gaming install base in the world?
I even considered popping on my tin foil hat and questioning if Apple had paid Supergiant Games, Netflix, or both to keep the game off Android. That would offer pretty powerful marketing for iOS as a gaming platform on its own.
But then, like the good old-fashioned journalist I am, I did my research. And, it turns out there’s nothing particularly sinister or surprising behind this decision.
The sad fact of the matter is: Supergiant Games, for whatever reason, doesn’t port its games to Android. Of the studio’s four critically-acclaimed titles so far, three have arrived on iOS. That includes Hades.
Bastion arrived in 2012, a year after its initial release. Transister copied that release schedule in 2015, a year following its launch on other platforms. Pyre is the only game that’s yet to arrive on iOS for some reason.
That brings us to the most recent news: Hades is coming to iOS. It took three years for this one to arrive this time, and Netflix to publish it, but it’s finally happening.
I don’t think there’s anything particularly strange about it skipping Android, other than Supergiant clearly doesn’t like developing for the platform. It’s a shame, but there we are.
Hopefully Netflix can help the game to arrive at a later date, as Hades is a huge hit for Supergiant and would make a very welcome home on our platform.
