Country music icon Dolly Parton initially didn’t want her music to be featured on Pam & Tommy. Delving intothe three-year marriage between Pamela Anderson and Tommy Lee, with a particular focus on the theft and illegal distribution of a sex tape featuring the couple, Pam & Tommypremiered on Hulu in February. The series is headlined by Lily James and Sebastian Stan in the respective title roles, with a cast that also includes Nick Offerman, Taylor Schilling, and Seth Rogen.
The music on the Hulu show has also gotten plenty of attention, with memorable tunes from the 1990s acting as nostalgia for the audience but also serving to set the stage and inform the viewers’ understanding of what’s happening in a given scene. As one example, Pam & Tommy deploys “Semi-Charmed Life” by Third Eye Blind to drive home that Tommy Lee is at a crossroads in his career. Another seminal song, Dolly Parton’s “I Will Always Love You”, is used to play over the closing credits of the finale. But it turns out that Parton wasn’t always so keen on having the song included. In fact, she had to be convinced.

Amanda Thomas, the music supervisor forPam & Tommy, spoke with Indiewire about the song choices for the series and their significance. Thomas also shed light on the process of what happens when an artist is reluctant to have their music as part of a show’s soundtrack. Thomas explains that, in Parton’s case, they had to rethink the entire pitch for why “I Will Always Love You” should be included. They argued that, essentially, it was about Pamela Anderson getting to a point where she could look back with fondness on a difficult time period in her life. The full quote is included below.
