Ignacio Varga tells Juan Bolsa and the Salamancas that he was hired by Alvarez to aid in the attempt on Lalo's life, but who is Alvarez, and has he been mentioned before? In Better Call Saul, season 6, episode 3, «Rock and Hard Place,» Nacho is backed into an inescapable corner. Since he began covertly working with Gus to thwart the Salamancas, Nacho has been playing with fire, and in season 6, episode 3 he meets his tragic fate. Before he takes his own life, Nacho agrees on a plan with Gus Fring that ensures his father's safety, whereby he lies to Don Juan and the Salamancas by saying that he is working for «Alvarez. Los Odios, out of Peru.»
Nacho's sacrifice is yet another example of his virtuous moral code. Despite living in the amoral world of drugs and violence, Nacho attempts to spare innocent lives. Like Jesse Pinkman, Nacho grows close to Mike Ehrmantraut. Their relative honor among thieves is why mutual respect blossomed between the pair, and why Mike's reaction to Nacho's death is so heart-breaking. Ultimately though, while the sharp-minded players in Better Call Saul always seem two steps ahead, this is one situation that Nacho could not wriggle out of.

The writers of Breaking Bad and Better Call Saul are adept at writing themselves in and out of corners, however, they are not known for using deus ex machinas, which makes the reference to the mysterious Alvarez character so surprising. Before Nacho's false confession, Alvarez and the Peruvian gang he works for are never mentioned in name throughout Better Call Saul or Breaking Bad. The one implication of the gang is
