Warning: Contains SPOILERS for Better Call Saul season 5!
Lalo Salamanca is one of Better Call Saul's biggest villains, but there is one strange thing about him: his real name is Eduardo. Lalo has gone by many different aliases, most recently calling himself Jorge De Guzman while awaiting trial in Better Call Saul season 5. However, the Lalo nickname is different, and in a series as complex as Better Call Saul, the name's origin is surprisingly simple.
Lalo Salamanca is one of the cartel's most feared members, known for his charm, strength, and business savvy. He is the nephew of Don Hector Salamanca and the cousin of Tuco Salamanca, who are prominent characters in both Better Call Saul and its father series Breaking Bad. Lalo acts antagonistically towards Gus Fring and the northern market, causing friction between the Salamancas and Gustavo's operation. Having performed feats such as taking out an entire team of mercenaries singlehandedly, Lalo's name is notorious within Breaking Bad's canonical world.

Eduardo «Lalo» Salamanca tends to go by his nickname in Better Call Saul, although some of his elders still call him Eduardo. Going by a preferred name is not uncommon in Better Call Saul, as cartel members like Nacho use these nicknames for extra protection. While some of these nicknames are chosen, Lalo goes by this nickname because it is a common shortening of Eduardo in Spanish.
Lalo is a fairly common nickname, being shorthand for several Spanish names such as Eladio, Gonzalo, and Eduardo. Although most English nicknames sound similar to one another (for example, Rob is short for Robert), Lalo is short for Eduardo for a different reason.
