For better or for worse, AEW has resisted the urge to hire free agents and then insert them directly into the main-event picture, and that didn't change with Toni Storm's recent emergence after leaving WWE. She debuted during the March 30 edition of Dynamite, taking on The Bunny in a qualifying match for the women's Owen Hart Memorial tournament. She won that bout, which set her up to take on Jamie Hayter in the opening round of the tourney on May 11, also on Dynamite.
She downed Hayter too, which lead Storm to a match with Britt Baker on the most recent edition of Dynamite. Baker has been one of the most consistent stars in the women's division throughout the life of AEW. Despite being sent to the back by D.M.D. prior to the start of the fight, Hayter would make her way back out to the ring during the finishing sequence, aiding Baker and helping her friend secure the win.

There's likely a long-term angle playing out here, but at the moment, giving Baker the win over Storm via the same tactics she's been using for the last three years felt stale. Thunder Rosa had to get her to agree to a steel cage match to prevent Hayter from interfering and now AEW has gone right back to booking her the same way? It just seemed like the time was right to build Storm up by giving her a match on the Double Or Nothing card. Winning the tournament would have been a great way for All Elite to quickly build up another star forAEW's women's division—something they're clearly lacking. But instead, audiences were treated to a finish they've seen a dozen times before.
