We Were Here Together begins with stakes higher than players have seen in either of the two previous games in the series. There is no escape room-type castle to get out of this time for the simple conflict of being trapped. This time, there is a flare and a radio distress call. This time, someone is hurt and possibly running out of time. This time, there is a bigger mystery to solve.
Like its previous iterations, We Were Here Together is a co-op puzzle game, but this time around, the developers emphasized the adventure aspect. Rather than having simple rooms to escape from, the game features extensive, ever-changing settings with complex puzzles that players must solve to move forward and unlock the game's hidden achievements. While focusing on communication and cooperation between teammates, the game rewards each player differently with different unlockable achievements depending on which route the player decides to take.

In homage to the first game in the series, We Were Here Together features and achievement earned practically before the player even enters the game. While simple, an achievement called «We're In This Together!» can be unlocked by inviting a friend to the game. It may not require solving any puzzles, but it's a necessary ice-breaker for the hidden achievements to come.
To unlock all 22 achievements in We Were Here Together, players will have to play the game twice through, once as player 1 and again as player 2, with a third run of the final chapter to access all of the endings.
