Wordle is everywhere right now. The popular word-guessing game has inspired ad-filled copycats and other scams on iPhone and Android. Watch out: There are no official Wordle apps. There’s only one official way to play the game.
Basically, there’s one official version of Wordle, and it’s at the powerlanguage.co.uk/wordle/ domain. There’s no official app on any mobile platform. If you search for Wordle on any of the popular app stores and find an app with that name, it’s not the original game.
Of course, there’s no guarantee that an app called “Wordle” on the App Store or Google Play is malicious. In fact, it could be someone looking to jump in on the hype by releasing a copycat game with the same name in an attempt to get more downloads (and presumably serve ads to make some money), which isn’t much better.
So to put it simply, if you want to get your daily Wordle fix, you need to go to the official website and play it in your web browser. For the time being, any apps featuring the viral word game aren’t the original game. In the best-case scenario, you’re downloading a copycat. In the worst-case scenario, you could be downloading a scam app.
