Warner Bros. Discovery is looking to ‘bolster’ DC’s gaming output, according to a new report.
According to Variety, following the merger of Warner Brothers and Discovery, which will see the new conglomerate take control of Warner Bros. Games, it’s claimed that internal discussions are taking place around how to “overhaul” the DC Universe in media, including gaming.
Warner Bros. Interactive Entertainment, the group’s gaming division, currently has four DC gaming projects in development, Gotham Knights, Suicide Squad: Kill the Justice League, The Wolf Among Us 2 and Wonder Woman.
The report also reveals that the company plans to rejuvenate characters such as Superman and that the company seeks a Kevin Feige-like figure to oversee this expansion.
While DC’s films are in a firm second place behind Disney’s Marvel Cinematic Universe at the box office, in gaming it’s been a much closer fight.
The 2010s saw the Batman Arkham games from Rocksteady become critical and commercial successes, and the Injustice series, a pair of fighting games developed by Mortal Kombat studio NetherRealm, were also well received.
While Marvel’s gaming output has stuttered somewhat with the middling reception and disappointing performance of Marvel’s Avengers, Marvel is seeing big success with its Spider-Man titles.
Developed by Insomniac Games, both Marvel’s Spider-Man and Marvel’s Spider-Man: Miles Morales were commercial and critical hits. A sequel is currently in development. Insomniac Games is also currently developing a Wolverine game.
Suicide Squad: Kill The Justice League, the next game from Rocksteady Studios, was originally set to release this year, however, in March it was delayed to 2023.
