Video game publisher Versus Evil has shut down with immediate effect, and all staff have been laid off. Some reports from now former employees suggest that the decision to close was not in the hands of Versus Evil to decide.
In a statement, Versus Evil said, “Today is a sad day. After 10 wonderful years, Versus Evil is shutting its doors. We’ve loved bringing you the best indie games we could find & sharing so many happy memories with you all, our amazing community! From the bottom of our hearts, THANK YOU for everything!”
Versus Evil has published some well known games including The Banner Saga series, Pillars of Eternity, Pillars of Eternity II, Tower of Guns, and Mothergunship. There are also games that were due to be published including Monolith: Requiem of the Ancients, Lil’ Guardsman, Tamarak Trail, and Broken Roads. The fate of these games is now unknown with developers having to find new publishing partners to work with.
Versus Evil’s sudden closure follows the closure of First Contact Entertainment. It closed down due to the costs of creating AAA VR games within a niche. 2023 has seen a number of studio closures including Free Radical Design, Volition , and Mimimi Games. Studios have also been making staff redundant, with thousands losing jobs across the industry.
Versus Evil was acquired by tinyBuild in 2021. TinyBuild has been approached for comment.
