Verizon this week announced plans to raise its minimum wage to $20 per hour for new Customer Service, Retail, and Inside Sales employees. Existing workers in these teams who currently earn less than $20 an hour will see their hourly rate automatically increase to the new rate.
The telecom is also adding premium pay differentials for assistant managers who work on holidays, Sundays, or are bilingual. In some markets, Verizon will offer a sign-on bonus for retail specialist and assistant manager positions.
"Our V Teamers give their best day in and day out to support our customers with all of their needs, which is why we want to make sure we support them as well," Verizon Consumer Group COO Krista Bourne said in a statement, adding that these changes "are the direct result of employee feedback."
T-Mobile started the trend in December, implementing a nationwide minimum pay of at least $20 per hour applied to "every single employee regardless of role" or contract status.
Rival AT&T, meanwhile, has made no widespread wage increases, though may be considering it now, according to Fortune. The federal minimum wage has not risen from $7.25 per hour since 2009, though many states have their own laws regarding base pay.
