Players looking for a bit of Viking-themed survival with friends on consoles can now jump into the super-popular Valheim on Xbox consoles, but what about PlayStation owners? Will they be able to pile into the longboat sometime soon? Well, don’t expect any new ports in the next six months, as according to an email sent to Game Pass subscribers (surfaced by the folks at Twisted Voxel) the game will be an Xbox console exclusive for at least half a year.
Fair enough, but what happens after those six months have expired? IGN recently asked Valheim lead designer Jonathan Smars about the possibility of a PlayStation release, and it certainly sounds like something could be in the cards.
“Currently, we’re only looking at the Xbox, but you never know.”
So yeah, sure seems like a PlayStation version will be coming eventually. You can’t really blame Iron Gate for doing it this way – release a port for one console then the other and get maximum promotion for each! Release the PlayStation version in six months, then a Switch version six months after that. Why not?
For those who haven’t been keeping up with the latest Valheim developments, you can check out a trailer for the Xbox version of the game here. The makers of Valheim are promising the PC and Xbox versions will be identical in terms of features and gameplay going forward (or at least as close as they can be). The Xbox version of the game also features multiple visual modes (Quality, Performance, and Balanced) and crossplay with the PC version of the game.
In other Valheim news, Iron Gate are working towards releasing the new Ashlands biome and a feature and content update they’re calling “Hildir’s Quest.” Release dates have not been provided for those two content expansions. The
