Quantic Dream and developer Parallel Studio have announced Under The Waves, a new narrative-driven adventure game coming in 2023.
Revelaed as part of Gamescom 2022's Opening Night Live show, Under The Waves follows Stan, an oil company diver in the 1970s who is exploring the depths of the North Sea. Underwater exploration will take you to caves and wrecks, as well as showcase marine wildlife. While beneath the waves Stan experiences a strange series of events that forces him to face isolation and grief and ultimately decide if he wants to return to the surface world.
Under The Waves hopes to shine a light on the importance of ocean preservation, and Parallel Studio has partnered with Surfrider Foundation Europe, a non-profit association responsible for the protection and enhancement of lakes, rivers, oceans, waves, and coastlines. Quantic Dream has pledged to finanically support the organization.
Parallel Studio plans to release Under The Waves on PC, Xbox One, Xbox Series X/S, PS4 and PS5 at some point in 2023.
This will be the third game that Quantic Dream has published since it decided to expand its business model back in 2019 after a deal with NetEase saw the company shift into multi-platform development and self-publishing. Quantic Dream's previous publishing projects were Jo-Mei's Sea of Solitude: Director's Cut and the upcoming Dustborn from Red Thread Games.
Quantic Dream itself is currently developing Star Wars: Eclipse, a branching narrative game set during the High Republic era. Some have already called for the game to be boycotted due to accusations facing Quantic Dream about its workplace culture.
