Tech journalism is a beat that is not usually fraught with fear. There are product announcements to cover, chip shortages to inform readers about, and the occasional takedown of an executive to write. But for a Ukraine-based group of tech sites, everything has changed.
Media for Creators operates three sites out of Ukraine and employs about 40 journalists who, before the war in Ukraine, covered topics familiar to PCMag readers. MC.today focuses on technology, business, and media. Highload covers topics of interest to developers and programmers. And ITC is a top Ukrainian resource on technology, pop culture, and IT.
Visit any of those sites now, though, and you’re going to see survival tips; coverage of the volunteer centers, start-ups, and technology services that have sprung up during the war; news about migration to other countries; and advice for refugees who have fled on how to find housing, clothing, and food. This is all alongside the steady stream of news that the sites have always been known for.
We spoke with Media for Creators spokesperson Pavel Chuikyn, who said that approximately half of the company’s journalists have left Ukraine and continue their work from other countries, while the rest are still filing their stories from within the country—including front-line territories.
“Depending on the region, the guys can prepare materials from bomb shelters or basements,” Chuikyn said. “But there are also those who are still lucky, like me, and they work from their apartments or houses. In any case, every day we all sound an air raid alert and we hide in shelters from possible missile or air strikes.”
