An insider report claims that a new Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic sequel is being developed by a studio other than original developer BioWare. Before the Mass Effect series, BioWare created a beloved sci-fi RPG in 2003’s Knights Of The Old Republic, which took players to a new era of the Star Wars universe set roughly a thousand years before the events of the movies. It also introduced fans to now-beloved KOTOR characters like Bastila Shan and Darth Revan, some of which are slowly being introduced into Disney's ongoing Star Wars canon in the form of Easter Egg references over the past few years. A sequel titled Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic II — The Sith Lords was developed by Fallout: New Vegas studio Obsidian Entertainment in 2004, and BioWare’s MMO spin-off Star Wars: The Old Republic continues to this day.
Gamers will be returning to the story that started it all soon, as a current-gen remake of the original Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic was announced during September’s PlayStation Showcase livestream. Longtime Star Wars PC port developed Aspyr Media will be developing Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake instead of BioWare, and Sony has confirmed that it will be exclusive to the PlayStation 5 at launch – though this doesn’t rule out the game being made available on platforms like Xbox Series X and PC later on. Story and gameplay details about Star Wars: Knights Of The Old Republic Remake have been largely kept under wraps since its initial announcement, but some fans are speculating that the remake could lead to another full-fledged KOTOR title down the road.
