Details are still scarce but Rockstar has at last officially confirmed that GTA 6 is in active development.
It has been nearly 10 years since Grand Theft Auto 5 released and, in that time, there has barely been a peep regarding Grand Theft Auto 6, at least in any official capacity.
After years of speculation and rumours, Rockstar Games itself has properly acknowledged GTA 6’s existence and the fan demand for it, albeit not by name.
In a blog post detailing upcoming updates for GTA Online and the PlayStation 5 and Xbox Series X/S re-releases of GTA 5, Rockstar took some time to address the next game in the series.
‘With the unprecedented longevity of GTA 5, we know many of you have been asking us about a new entry in the Grand Theft Auto series,’ it reads.
‘With every new project we embark on, our goal is always to significantly move beyond what we have previously delivered – and we are pleased to confirm that active development for the next entry in the Grand Theft Auto series is well underway. We look forward to sharing more as soon as we are ready, so please stay tuned to the Rockstar Newswire for official details.’
Most rumours have suggested that GTA 6 has been in development for a while, with one from 2020 claiming it was already halfway done. Others though have claimed that it won’t be released until around 2025.
While there is an obvious lack of any real information, the official statement from Rockstar at least confirms that development has been ongoing for a while now.
As for the upcoming GTA 5 re-release, it’s now slated for March 15, although there so far seems to be little excitement surrounding it, especially after the most recent trailer did little to convince fans that it is a significant upgrade.
