The first total lunar eclipse (Chandra Grahan) of the year that took place today, May 16, 2022 is now over. And the photos of the event showing the Blood Moon (the moon turning red) are out. Though the eclipse was not visible in India and several other parts of the world, people were able to watch it as NASA telecast the event live. It can be known that a lunar eclipse occurs when the Sun, Earth, and Moon align in a straight line so that the Moon passes into Earth’s shadow. In a total lunar eclipse, the entire Moon falls within the darkest part of Earth’s shadow, called the umbra. When the Moon is within the umbra, it will turn a reddish hue. A lunar eclipse is sometimes called “Blood Moon” because of this phenomenon. The lunar eclipse photos are phenomenal, indeed!

The first total lunar eclipse of 2022 was visible in the eastern half of the United States and all of South America. They were able to see every stage of the lunar eclipse. While totality was visible in much of Africa, western Europe, Central and South America, and most of North America.
