An entertainment writer eats his shoe because of Top Gun: Maverick in a hilarious new video. Top Gun was a blockbuster success for Tom Cruise way back in 1986. But instead of starring in an immediate sequel, Cruise elected to leave behind Pete “Maverick” Mitchell and his need for speed.
Cruise of course went on from Top Gun to star in many more hit movies (and a few flops), establishing himself as one of the biggest movie stars of all-time. But even with all his accomplishments — heading up the Mission: Impossible franchise; starring in Steven Spielberg movies; getting nominated for Oscars – the character of Pete Mitchell always remained one of Cruise's most memorable and popular creations. And so it was arguably not entirely a surprise when, back in 2010, it was announced that a long-awaitedTop Gun sequel was finally in development from Paramount Pictures with Cruise to return as Maverick. But despite Cruise’s apparent desire to play Maverick once again, many expressed skepticism thatTop Gun 2 would ever actually make it to screens.

One of those doubting the likelihood of Top Gun 2 making it through the development process and reaching screens was entertainment writer Matt Patches, who in 2010 tweeted that he would eat his shoe if Cruise ever came back as Maverick. With Top Gun: Maverick indeed ready to hit screens despite such widespread skepticism, Patches revisited his 2010 remarks and has now made good on his promise to eat a shoe, documenting the entire shoe-eating saga in a video.
