Top Gun: Maverick is projected to gross over $100 million domestic and $180 million worldwide in its opening weekend, both career-bests for Tom Cruise. His role as the Naval pilot Pete «Maverick» Mitchell in Tony Scott's 1986 Top Gun was crucial in cultivating Cruise's reputation as an action star. Ten years later, Cruise portrayed IMF agent Ethan Hunt for the first time in 1996's Mission: Impossible, a franchise that is still going strong to this day. Other than Maverick and Hunt, another one of Cruise's most popular action roles came in Steven Spielberg's War of the Worlds.
Following a series of pandemic-related delays, Top Gun: Maverick is finally set to release in theaters this Memorial Day weekend on May 27. Cruise returns to lead the Maverick cast as the titular test pilot alongside Val Kilmer, who returns as his former rival from the first film, Tom «Iceman» Kazansky. The long-awaited sequel finds Maverick training a new generation of pilots 36 years later, one of which is Bradley «Rooster» Bradshaw (Miles Teller), the son of Maverick's late RIO (Radar Intercept Officer) and best friend, Goose, who was played by Anthony Edwards. Maverick's star-studded cast also includes Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, and Ed Harris.
