Top Gun: Maverick finally flew into theaters this weekend, quickly making history by achieving the highest Thursday gross ever for Paramount. The long-awaited sequel to 1986's Top Gun follows Peter «Maverick» Mitchell (played by Tom Cruise) once he's been tested over the course of his long career in the Navy and is now in a position to pass the torch of knowledge on to the newest recruits.
Though Top Gun: Maverick introduces several new characters, such as Vice Admiral Beau «Cyclone» Simpson (Jon Hamm, Mad Men), Maverick's boss, many elements of the story are vestiges from the original. Young aviator Rooster (Miles Teller, The Offer) is the son of Maverick's best friend Goose, who died in the first film, and his love interest Penny Benjamin (Jennifer Connelly, Snowpiercer) was actually mentioned by Goose in Maverick's predecessor.

Screen Rant spoke to Connelly about how she views the long history between Penny and Maverick, which original Top Gun scenes stand out most to her, and whether she's ready to return for another film.
Screen Rant: Congrats on this movie; it is awesome. We were screaming during the screening last night.
Jennifer Connelly: That's how my family and I were when we saw it. It's so fun.
Did you see it with an audience?
Jennifer Connelly: No, but we made a lot of noise.
How do you describe who Penny is, and what her relationship with Maverick was prior to the movie?
Jennifer Connelly: Penny Benjamin is mentioned in the original Top Gun, so they have a long history. I think that they've been in and out of each other's lives at different points over the years. You can get a sense of their relationship from the way she handles that.
