Top Gun: Maverick star Danny Ramirez reveals he lied about not being afraid of flying on an official waiver required for the part. Top Gun: Maverick, which premiered on May 27, is the long-awaited sequel to the 1986 Top Gun. The film picks up three decades after the events of the original and sees Pete «Maverick» Mitchell (Tom Cruise) enjoying life as a test pilot and avoiding promotions in order to keep flying. However, when he is ordered to train a group of TOPGUN graduates for a special mission, Maverick must confront his past and take on his most urgent task yet. Cruise reprises his role from Top Gun, as does Val Kilmer, who portrays Admiral Tom «Iceman» Kazansky.

In terms of critical reception, box-office performance, and quality, Top Gun: Maverick surpassed its predecessor. Its success is especially important, considering the film took eight years to make and faced multiple pandemic-related delays. Top Gun: Maverick reviews also had high praise for its stellar cast, which includes Cruise, Kilmer, Ramirez, Miles Teller, Lewis Pullman, Monica Barbaro, and Jennifer Connelly.
