Top Gun: Maverick star Monica Barbaro was able to get through the film's complex flying maneuvers without throwing up thanks to her dance training. However, Barbaro stands out from her co-stars in one notable way: she is the Top Gun franchise’s first female fighter pilot. The 31-year-old actor's career started back in 2012. In her early years, Barbaro made one-off TV appearances and acted in short films. She later landed more substantial roles in TV series like UnREAL, Chicago Justice, and Chicago P.D.Barbaro’s Top Guncharacter marks her first role in a major blockbuster film — and a highly successful one at that. Top Gun: Maverick has broken box office records and earned rave critical reviews for its impressive action sequences. However, to pull these scenes off, the cast went through intense training, including for flight and water survival.

Barbaro attributes her years of dance training to being able to get through these usually nauseating sky-high stunts, according to Glamour. Before acting, Barbaro got an BFA in dance from New York University. The actor said this training gave Barbaro a “high pain tolerance,” equipping her with the necessary constitution to get through the intense flight scenes without vomiting (as was the unfortunate fate of many of her co-stars).
