Top Gun: Maverick star Tom Cruise reveals that he dresses incognito and sneaks into theaters to watch every new movie. Maverick is a many-years-later follow-up to the actor's 1986 hit Top Gun, in which he stars as the hotshot fighter pilot Maverick. The new film sees the character being recruited to train a new team of top pilots, including Rooster (Miles Teller), the son of a fallen comrade who resents Maverick for his father's death. The cast of the film, which is coming to theaters soon on May 27, 2022, also includes Glen Powell, Lewis Pullman, Ed Harris, Jennifer Connelly, Jon Hamm, and Val Kilmer returning as Iceman.
Top Gun was a hit from very early in his career, before Cruise began starring in the Mission: Impossible franchise. As each entry of that series progressed, he became more and more immersed in performing his character Ethan Hunt's radical, jaw-dropping stunts himself. This included hanging onto the side of a plane mid-flight and sliding down the outside of the Burj Khalifa, which is the tallest building in the world. Cruise has taken this methodology to Top Gun: Maverick, which will feature the star actually piloting the plane he flies onscreen. He also insisted that his castmates receive training so they were able to perform challenging stunts properly, though stunt pilots were used for the other Top Guncast members when necessary.
