One of the few notable announcements from the Xbox Tokyo Game Show stream was the reveal of Threads of Time, a time-travelling JRPG that is coming to Xbox Series X|S and PC.
A time-skipping adventure, Threads of Time will take players from the prehistoric land of dinosaurs (where humans and dinos coexist like it’s The Flintstones) through to the far future. The Watcher of Time guides you through these disparate ages, as you look to assemble a team to restore the Order of the Time Knights, hoping to foil a plot that threatens the fabric of time itself.
Threads of Time takes liberal inspiration from classics of the JRPG genre – most specifically Chrono Trigger – in particular with the visual stylings that feature a 2.5D pixel art style not too far removed from Square Enix’s HD-2D games, though arguably with even more cinematic flair. It’s leaning on Unreal Engine 5 to achieve this.
The turn-based combat has a focus on building up combos, forcing you to think a bit more strategically as you face off against such enemies as Fenrir, the wolf of legends, and Ruin, a massive robotic behemoth in the far future.
It looks really interesting and is a game we’ll certainly be keeping an eye on. Threads of Time is in development at Riyo Games, with Humble Games set to publish.
