Warning! Spoilers for Batman '89 #5
As the limited series Batman ’89 continues to expand the Burtonverse, Barbara Gordon has been growing into a more recognizable version of her comic book characterization. Known as the first Batgirl in the DC Universe, Barbara is also the daughter of Commissioner Jim Gordon, which plays a big part in her role in the series.
Throughout Batman ’89, the miniseries written by Sam Hamm with art by Joe Quinones and Leonardo Ito has seen many characters who didn’t appear in the two Michael Keaton Batman films directed by Tim Burton. Originally set up in the franchise’s first installment, Harvey Dent portrayed by Billy Dee Williams finally becomes Two-Face in the comic book sequel to Batman Returns. Similarly intended at first for live action, Keaton’s Batman receives a crimefighting sidekick in Robin, modeled after the likeness of Marlon Wayans, who was casted for the role that he never got the chance the play. With these two major new characters, Barbara’s inclusion in the series hasn’t been as heavily promoted.

In a preview forBatman ’89 #5, Barbara Gordon has a conversation with her father Commissioner Gordon, and emphasizes her support of Batman. In an argument with her dad revolving around their shared work in the Gotham City Police Department, Barbara retorts,“Vigilante justice. That's how we do it in Gotham. No thought for the good in his heart, or the suffering he’s—" While she seems to be a long ways off from putting on a costume and becoming Batgirl, the conversation echoes the independent sentiment of Barbara in DC canon, as she goes on her own path apart from her father.
