The Xbox Series S portable screen reveals new features
Australian company UPspec Gaming has posted the final launch trailer for the xScreen, a portable screen designed to plug directly into the Xbox Series S.
The xScreen was announced in June 2021 ahead of its planned Kickstarter campaign, with anyone interested able to reserve the peripheral for $1 and lock in ‘early bird’ pricing of $159 (compared to the full price of $249).
The Kickstarter launched the following month and reached its AU$13,000 goal within 20 minutes, eventually ending on AU$145,118.
The xScreen is designed to plug into the Series S’s HDMI and USB ports and folds up to offer an 11.6″ IPS screen.
The screen will display a 1080p 60Hz image, and has integrated stereo speakers, along with built-in controls for display settings and volume.
The result is similar to portable screens that were designed for the PSOne and GameCube which essentially turned those consoles into ‘portable’ devices (as long as a power supply was nearby).
The xScreen, however, also boasts a “cable-free attachment solution”, which means it draws from the Series S’s own power supply to run and doesn’t need a second plug.
New features announced in today’s trailer include the option to turn on a crosshair overlay for FPS games, and the ability to automatically turn off the Xbox when the lid is closed (to prevent it overheating when the lid blocks the vent).
Users can also add an optional stand to the console and stand it up vertically.
According to its creator UPspec Gaming, the screen will only weigh 695g and can be placed in a 15″ laptop bag along with the Series S for transportation, though a bespoke carrying case for the screen and console is also available.
