The Mystery of The Byways Murders is a Contract in The Witcher 3 that Geralt can pick up while in Velen, but it can easily catch him off guard if he isn't careful. It's an ancient beast that lies at the heart of the Byways mystery and only the first of many Geralt will encounter if you plan to take on the game's Blood and Wine expansion.

Riding upon the village, Geralt will notice something is off straight away and will unsurprisingly first need to dispatch a horde of ghouls that have overrun it. Once he's cleared the threat, a couple of villagers will poke out from one of the buildings and make it painfully clear they're hiding something. Geralt could let matters rest, but contract or not, the white wolf's curiosity is always piqued by a good mystery, especially one so poorly hidden.
Geralt's payout is subject to change depending on how he happens upon the blight in this town and his negotiations with both his contractor and the Byways villagers.
A little piece of paper isn't stopping the monster from wreaking havoc on the village, so contract or not, Geralt may happen upon the carnage taking place at the town of Byways, just southwest of Fyke Isle in Velen. But if Geralt finds himself in Oreton before venturing through Byways, he may stop by the notice board to pick up the Contract: Missing Soldiers, which will point him to commander Milan Noran for further information.
Geralt can report to Milan after his dealings in Byways if he picked up the contract off the notice board in Oreton beforehand. However, by not speaking with Milan about the contract prior to investigating the town, Geralt will miss his opportunity to haggle for a better payout. If Geralt
