Godzilla vs. Kong 2 presents the MonsterVerse with an opportunity to fix its long-standing Kong problem, which relates to his overreliance on the movies’ human characters. Legendary Pictures is working on a Godzilla vs. Kong sequel, which makes Kong’s return to the big screen inevitable. Exactly what the movie’s story will entail remains unclear, but there’s a good chance it’ll reveal what happened to him after his move to the hidden Hollow Earth world.
Godzilla vs. Kong put Kong through the ringer. In addition to losing Skull Island, Kong barely survived a grueling fight in the ocean with the King of the Monsters. And after getting tricked into escorting the humans to the Hollow Earth, Kong encountered two Warbat monsters and was forced into a fight he came very close to losing. Making matters worse, Kong found himself on the wrong side of a brutal rematch with Godzilla, who unleashed his wrath on the giant ape. Had he not been saved by the humans, it would have been Kong’s last fight. Following his revival, Kong actually had to save his would-be killer by fighting Mechagodzilla.

The challenges Kong had to endure in the movie (and how they were overcome) reflect a major problem that needs to be solved in the Godzilla vs. Kong sequel. Kong was placed in numerous, life-threatening situations in the last movie and had to be saved from all of them by the humans. It shouldn’t be forgotten that the humans stopped Godzilla from hitting Kong with a point-blank atomic breath blast at the very beginning of their fight. If the humans hadn’t used their firepower to distract Godzilla, Kong would most likely have died before the story could really go anywhere.
