This level of camp is one that a modern audience would surely find difficult to digest.
In this era, the Skrulls have been deadly serious, playing the long game by secretly replacing superheroes as part of their methodical invasion of Earth. Their grand scheme ruined the life and reputation of Jessica Drew, ensuring that Spider-Woman was Secret Invasion’s central imposter in the definitive 2008 event. Heroes like Elektra and Hank Pym were also secretly replaced. The effects of the Skrulls’ diabolical scheme linger today, as any superhero could secretly be an alien imposter, prompting an unhealthy level of suspicion within the Marvel community. With a second Secret Invasion event on the horizon, there is now ample reason for fans and heroes alike to once again ramp up their Skrull-related paranoia.
