To allow more screen time for Johnny Depp’s scene-stealing fan-favorite Jack Sparrow, the series started to shift its focus from as early as the second movie, 2006’s Dead Man’s Chest.
This ultimately backfired for the franchise, with few viewers now caring whether supporting stars like Kaya Scodelario’s Carina return forPirates of the Caribbean 6. Depp’s Sparrow became the main attraction of the series even in the original trilogy and, as a result, fans never became heavily invested in the rest of the saga’s sprawling cast. An early example of this storytelling issue can be seen in the trilogy’s final movie, Pirates of the Caribbean: At World’s End, wasting the Kraken despite its obvious potential.
