The critical reception to the recently release Super Mario Bros. Movie is probably less than ideal for Shigeru Miyamoto and Illumination, which launched as one of the lowest rated movies the production company has ever put out. The score has climbed since release as the reviews have poured in, as the movie now sits at a mildly disappointing 53 percent on Rotten Tomatoes. Not bad, but not good either.
However, it seems we have yet another example of critics disagreeing with the general public, as the movie released in theatres today for everyone to go see. The audience score for The Super Mario Bros. Movie is currently sat at 96 (previously 98) at the time of writing, although this number could go up or down as it hits more regions. This makes it one of the most highly rated films so far this year by the general public.

Quite why the thoughts of critics and the public are so different will always be a mystery, though it shouldn't surprise anyone who's seen their fair share of video game adaptations on the big screen. The Sonic the Hedgehog movies share a similar difference in viewpoints, and while you could place a lot of that on fans artificially inflating the score because its a video game adaptation, there's some feeling that film critics just don't tend to like the medium.
The general consensus among critics is that the movie has a thin plot, something which you'd probably expect from a Mario movie made by the same production company responsible for Despicable Me and the Minions.
