Swedish gaming company Embracer Group has credited the franchise with playing a large part in the company’s improved fiscal first-quarter financials.
The Hollywood Reporter revealed that Embracer had a revenue gain of 47 percent for the period of April to June over the same quarter of last year. The outlet noted that the company cites “a strong contribution from Middle-earth Enterprises, driven by strong licensing revenue for The Lord of the Rings” as part of the reason for its growth.
“The performance of Middle-earth Enterprises is well ahead of the business plan developed at the time of acquisition a year ago. It is encouraging to see many exciting external projects based on this incredible IP, including the recently successfully released Magic the Gathering trading card game The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, the upcoming PC/console survival-crafting game The Lord of the Rings: Return to Moria as well as many other exciting new products that will grow the IP further.”
Alongside the Magic: The Gathering cards themed after the franchise and the launch of The Lord of the Rings: Tales of Middle-earth, the video game The Lord of the Rings: Gollum released this past May. The title released to negative critical reception, with critics pointing out its technical issues and dull gameplay.
New Line Cinema and WingNut Films produced the original The Lord of the Rings trilogy, with Barrie M. Osborne, Peter Jackson, Fran Walsh, and Tim Sanders serving as producers (Sanders only for The Fellowship of the Ring).
